An electric vehicle is not just a petrol car with a different engine. The weight, torque delivery, and braking behaviour are fundamentally different — and your rims need to be spec'd accordingly.

Load Index — The Critical Number

EVs are significantly heavier than equivalent ICE cars due to battery packs. The BYD Sealion 7, for example, weighs around 2,200kg kerb — that's 400–600kg more than most petrol SUVs. A standard rim with an insufficient load index will deform or crack under sustained EV weight. Every Gravity EV rim is rated for high-load applications.

Instant Torque & Rim Stress

EVs deliver 100% of torque instantly from 0 RPM. On a petrol car, torque builds gradually — rims experience progressively increasing stress. On an EV, that full rotational force hits the rim the moment you press the accelerator. Low-quality cast rims can develop micro-fractures under repeated EV-style acceleration. Forged construction handles this far better.

Regenerative Braking & Brake Dust

Regenerative braking means EV friction brakes are used far less frequently — but when they are used (emergency stops, high-speed deceleration), they work extremely hard. Wheel Weight & Range

Every gram of unsprung weight affects EV range and ride comfort. A heavier rim forces the motor to work harder, particularly at highway speeds. Forged rims are typically 20–30% lighter than equivalent cast rims at the same strength — which is why EV manufacturers like Tesla spec forged wheels on performance variants. What We Check
Before Every EV Fitment

Every EV rim fitment at Pitstop goes through a structured check. Not because it's required — because it's the only way to do it properly.

Load Index Verification

We verify the rated load index of every rim against your EV's actual kerb weight — axle by axle. EVs often have different front/rear weight distribution due to motor and battery placement.

PCD & Offset Fitment Check

Incorrect offset on an EV creates unusual tyre scrub and stresses wheel bearings faster — particularly an issue given EV torque delivery. We confirm PCD, offset, and hub bore before any rim goes on.

Torque & TPMS Reset During Fitment

All rims are torqued to manufacturer spec with a calibrated torque wrench during the fitment process. TPMS sensors are reset or replaced as part of the same job — critical for EVs that display real-time tyre pressure in the instrument cluster.

Hub Bore — Perfect Fit, No Rings Needed

Generic aftermarket rims use an oversized hub bore and rely on plastic hub rings to centre the rim on your car's hub. Over time these rings can crack or go missing, causing vibration. Gravity EV rims are machined to your car's exact hub bore diameter — a direct, rattle-free fit with no centric rings required.

Technically yes, but it depends on the load index. Most aftermarket rims are rated for petrol car weights — typically 1,400–1,800kg. Popular EVs in Singapore like the BYD Sealion 7 (~2,200kg), Tesla Model Y (~2,000kg), and Hyundai IONIQ 5 (~2,100kg) exceed what standard rims are rated for. A rim that’s underrated won’t necessarily fail immediately, but it will fatigue faster and is more likely to crack on Singapore’s speed bumps and kerbs. Yes, but the impact depends on what you’re upgrading to. Going from OEM to a heavier cast rim of the same size will reduce range slightly due to increased rotational mass. The bigger factor is tyre selection — a lower-profile tyre on a larger rim typically has higher rolling resistance, which affects range more than the rim itself. The BYD Sealion 7 has a kerb weight of approximately 2,200kg with an uneven front/rear weight distribution due to its rear motor configuration. Changing rims alone does not void your EV warranty in Singapore. Under LTA regulations, rim modifications within approved size parameters are permitted for road use. Your vehicle warranty covers manufacturing defects — a rim change doesn’t affect that. However, if an incorrectly-specced rim causes damage to suspension or wheel bearings, that damage would not be covered. This is exactly why correct load index and offset matter so much for EVs.
